Right or Wrong?
This week in sociology class we discussed two incidents the first was Britney Spears decided that it was a good idea to drive with her small child on her lap. Britney claimed she was getting away from the paparazzi. When we look at this situation we say this is wrong because it is putting a baby in danger. In her mindset she probably thought differently and was raised differently, so we judge people by the things they do. I personally think no matter what she is wrong because you must be in a car seat until a certain age, and that is the law. The second story was a women from Denmark, and her husband who was from New York. One day they went into a coffee shop to have lunch and they left their child in the stroller outside the cafe while they went inside. People walking by couldn't believe what they were seeing because this is so dangerous especially in New York. Little did they know in Denmark when you go into a restaurant you leave your baby outside because they need fresh air. It was because no one knew her culture and background. Instead everyone was quick to judge and say what a bad parent she is. Now she should be called a bad mother, but in my opinion she was wrong to leave her baby outside especially because her husband is from New York, and its a much dangerous place than Denmark because there this is normal. This relates to the term ethnocentrism which means judging other cultures by the standard of your own. Our standard is bring your baby inside because something bad could happen. This is something we should all overcome and I believe that learning different cultures and hearing about their experiences could help teach us and help us understand why other people do things we might not do.

Theory of LOVE
This week in sociology class we did an activity on valentines day about the word love. The activity we did involved looking at the "meaning" in a macro and micro perspective. Then we also took a survey and after taking this survey it made me think do I really know what it means? I think back in the day people were able to really know what love is and feel love and it was able to be defined more than it is today. Back then they did not have these dramatized shows on TV, or cosmo magazines. Today, love is thrown around and said about anything. For example, I could say "I love this shirt", but in reality I probably won't love it forever because something new and better will come out next week. That activity was fun because it was cool to hear what people think about the word because it is a good discussion topic since we don't really understand the meaning as a society and you can only make up your own opinion on it because it will never have a true meaning that can be defined because it is so complex.

Sociology Mindset
Sociology has been getting very interesting. We have been talking a lot about our mindset and the way we see things. We did this activity called Your Mindset List. In that activity we came up with examples for children about 5-6 years and younger won't experience in their lifetime, but we have. We said all their friends will not have a myspace, never know how to read a map, no classrooms will have chalkboards, they won't have to use a textbook for class. Thinking about those things was weird to see how it all changed so fast. Everyday something new comes out and changes and its always going to be better than the next and we as consumers just want more and more of the advanced technology so our lives become easier, but then we become closed in and forget what is really around us. For example, kids play football video games more than they actually will go outside and play football. Hopefully we can change that now since we notice those things so that our world doesn't become based off of the new technology.

Sociology Class
Sociology class is really fun and interesting. This week we talked about how fast we can make judgements on other people, and those judgements aren't always true. We did an activity where 3 students went up in front of the class and behind them on the board were description words. As a class we had to choose 3 of the words that best describes them. We chose descriptions by the way they said hello, and how they spun, but no one in class was best friends with any of them, or even talked to any of them before. We learned that some of those descriptions we chose weren't anything like the person. That showed us how we really do make judgements quickly about people we don't even know. We watched a video in class the other day related to making judgements and connections. One thing that stood out to me was that "we have to embrace vulnerability to feel comfortable being ourselves to make connections." I thought that was very interesting and I am excited to keep learning more.

First Day of Sociology
I was so excited to find out that my best friend was now in my 3rd period sociology class. I knew this was a class in my interest and heard great things about it. The first day we walked in and no one said anything not even the teacher. The whole room was silent and it was awkward, but a few kids here and there were whispering. We all were waiting for our teacher to give us instructions on what to do next, but she never did and we all sat in silence. After awhile she said she had enough because a few kids were giggling and we all thought it was a game. We know from experience that when you walk into the classroom that we wait for a teacher to give us instructions, but when the teacher doesn't it is out of the norm. My teacher then started talking to us and we all learned that most people react the same way to situations like that one. From that moment on I knew this class would be fun and exciting!
